CROSSFLON LR D5 BEARINGS

Crossflon LR D5 is a general commercial bearing capable of continuous non-lubricated operation at PV values up to approximately 0.35. Fig 1 shows the wear rates as a function of time at various PV values. The use of lubricants or cooling fluids allow the bearings to operate at higher PV values. Temperature should also be taken into consideration, generally as the temperature rises above ambient, PV values decease and at lower temperatures PV values increase.

Radial Wear VS Time

Load
In non-lubricated applications, Crossflon LR D5 bearings are generally limited to 14 MPa. Deformation can be considered as a function of wall thickness, temperature and load (See Fig 2). Since deformation under load is expressed as a % of the wall thickness of the sleeve, it is better to design the bearing with as minimal a radial wall as is practical. It should be noted that load limits can be increased by using very thin walled bearings such as the Crossflon ‘T’ Liner bearing.

Deformation VS Load

Speed
Crossflon LR D5 bearings are generally limited to 2 m/s when running dry at low loads. Higher speeds can be achieved by the use of lubricants or liquid coolants.

Friction
Friction decreases rapidly as load increases (see fig.3). From figure 4 we can also see the effect of surface velocity on friction. The friction at start up, (static friction) and at very slow speeds is extremely low, stick-slip is virtually non-existent. This makes Crossflon LR D5 bearings ideal for start/stop and oscillating conditions. Coefficients of friction in the range of .05 -.08µm can be achieved when fully lubricated. This applies with similar coefficients seen in fully lubricated metal bearings.

Coefficient of Friction VS Load

Mating Surface
The hardest possible counter face gives the optimum performance but a hardness of 35 Rc should be the minimum. Crossflon LR D5 is not suitable for soft shafts such as aluminium or stainless steel. (Contact our technical department for advise on Crossflon grades suitable for this type of surface).

Surface Finish
It is recommended that a surface finish in the range of 8 -16 microinches RMS is used to optimise best performance. Surface finish up to 32µm can be used but it could reduce the life of the bearing.

Bearing Failure
Elevated temperatures, heavy loads and impact under loading will not cause Crossflon LR D5 bearings to shatter, the bearing will merely deform. This eliminates catastrophic failure, which can cause damage to other components.

Corrosion Resistance
Crossflon LR D5 Material is virtually inert to all acids and solvents.
